Hello.
My name is Alex Charlton, and I run DesignbyCharlton, a freelance creative studio based in Manchester, UK. I work closely with clients to bring their ideas to life and help their businesses stand out from the crowd. I specialise in complete company rebrands—developing brand identities, logos, guidelines, and promotional materials that are clear, consistent, and visually impactful. I also apply my UX/UI design skills to create functional, engaging websites that support business growth and enhance user experience.

Alongside running my studio, I work as a Graphic Designer at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, the largest trust in the UK. My role within the Medical Illustration department has given me invaluable experience producing digital communications that highlight the dedication of NHS staff and help patients understand key procedures with clarity. I’ve also developed hands-on technical skills through designing wall art, roller banners, and printed materials, as well as printing, laminating, cutting, and assembling a wide range of clinical and promotional assets.
My Story
From a young age, I’ve been surrounded by creativity. My dad worked as a Creative Director and ran his own advertising agency, and I often visited his studio, fascinated by the equipment, props, and energy of the creative environment. Now in his retirement, he is a painter with an extensive collection of artwork—pieces I plan to introduce into my online shop as I continue to grow as a designer. This early exposure to design and visual storytelling played a huge role in inspiring my own creative path.

I also gained extensive experience working in the hospitality sector as a chef, which helped me develop strong team leadership, organisational skills, and effective time management. These qualities have transferred seamlessly into my passion for Graphic Design, where I first discovered my creative strengths through consistently high grades in art and graphics during high school and college. I went on to earn a Distinction in the Art Foundation Diploma at Manchester Metropolitan University, which laid a strong foundation for my design journey.

Most recently, I graduated with a First Class degree in Graphic Design from the University of Huddersfield. This experience further sharpened my digital design skills, strengthened my creative thinking, and enabled me to consistently deliver high-quality projects that meet industry standards.

Alongside my studies and employment, I have built extensive experience as a freelance graphic designer, collaborating with a wide range of clients on their projects. I’ve created engaging and impactful design solutions including websites, magazines, personalised branding, promotional materials, and more. My background in print—gained through roles within both the NHS and university—also inspired me to launch my own online print shop, where I upload new artwork and designs weekly. These pieces are available to purchase and represent both my personal creative interests and my professional skillset.
